Zero-Click: the ultimate proof that the user no longer browses… they decide

The figure is so striking that it seems exaggerated: less than 0.21% of queries made using AI tools result in a click through to a digital platform. And yet, this is exactly what is happening in Spain according to the latest analysis by GfK DAM, presented at Next Media.
That percentage, minuscule, almost symbolic, doesn't describe a technical problem or a one-off drop in traffic. It describes a structural change in user behaviour: lThe decision is resolved in the AI interface., not on the web. The user gets the answer, validates it, and moves on. No need to go any further. Welcome, now really, to the Zero-Click era.
AI doesn't drive traffic – it drives answers.
The study confirms that the uptake of tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity is skyrocketing: almost 50% of Spanish users already use them on a regular basis, with monthly usage time having tripled to 2.5 hours. But what is significant is not just the growth, but the impact: these tools practically generate no external traffic.
In a AI-dominated model:
- The user solves it faster.
- The platform concentrates interaction.
- External content becomes a source, not a destination.
This intensifies a phenomenon that had already been brewing in search engines: the Zero-Click experience. If Google had been keeping users on the SERP for years with panels, direct answers or featured snippets, AI interfaces take this to the extreme: they don't even show links by default. The answer is the experience.
70% non-click searches
The data of the 70% no-click queries Confirmation of a fact: the digital journey is no longer about “searching and visiting”, but about “asking and solving”.
In this context:
- Brands stop competing for traffic and start competing per appearance.
- Traditional SEO is losing ground to optimisation for language models.
- Visibility is no longer measured by clicks, but by presence within generated responses.
- Authority no longer lies in the domain itself, but rather in the model that synthesises the information.
The biggest losers, for now, are evergreen content: guides, recipes, tutorials, historical events and how-to articles. Anything that an AI can summarise without the need for redirects. The drop from 20% to 65% confirms that the decentralisation of organic traffic is not a risk: it is a reality that is already underway.
What this study really confirms
Zero-click is no longer an anomaly. It is the predominant behaviour of the modern digital user. The 0.2% figure is not a symptom: it is a clear message to the entire ecosystem: The user no longer accesses content, they access conclusions. And AI becomes the primary mediator between the two.
Within a horizon of less than two years, according to the study itself, AI will be naturally integrated into the digital lives of most users. For the media, this means rethinking their value proposition. For brands, this means rethinking their presence and their signals.
Zero-Click is not the end of marketing. It's the end of a model. For those of us working in digital strategy, creativity, and communication, the Zero-Click phenomenon has profound implications:
- The content should be designed for agents, not just humans.
If AI synthesises, we must think about how we want to be synthesised. - Authority will be algorithmic.
Brand relevance will depend on the frequency with which a model chooses it as a reference. - SEO transforms into “Model-Shaping”.
How we influence the way models understand a sector, a company, or a product. - Brand experience happens before the click.
And many times, it happens without a click. - Attention is shifting from domains to agents.
The intermediary is no longer a search engine: it is a system that responds on our behalf.
Ultimately, we are heading towards marketing designed for responses, not for pages.. El Zero-Click forces us to change the strategic question. It is no longer:
“How do I get them to visit my website?” translates to “How do I get my brand into the response?”.”
In a world where AI summarises, filters and decides, brands that continue to design for clicks will be designing for an endangered scenario. Those that design to be found, to be cited, considered, synthesised, will be the ones leading the next decade of marketing and communication.
Because the future isn't decided in traffic, it's decided in agentic presence.
